Why I Love Coaching

HOW IT ALL BEGAN - Kylie Casey

I met Adam at a time when football was no longer part of his life. For someone who had spent his entire childhood and adult life immersed in the game, it was surprising to see that he barely watched football anymore. In fact, if a match came on television, he would often change the channel.

That intrigued me.

How does someone who loved football for their entire life walk away from it?

How does a young boy with big dreams become a professional footballer, represent his country, achieve so much, and then find himself disconnected from the very game that shaped him?

The more I listened, the more questions I found myself asking.

What drove him in those early years?

What helped him overcome setbacks?

How did injuries impact him?

What did it feel like to be selected?

What did it feel like not to be selected?

What was it like to feel like an outsider while still being part of a team?

What happens when your identity becomes so closely tied to being "Adam Casey the football player" that it's difficult to separate the person from the player?

As we reflected on his journey, I kept coming back to one question.

What if?

What if young players had support through the challenges that football inevitably brings?

What if they were better prepared for disappointment, rejection, injury, pressure and uncertainty?

What if discipline and resilience were developed together?

What if players understood that their value wasn't determined by a team selection, a coach's decision, or a result on the weekend?

What if we could go back to that grassroots player and equip them with the tools to navigate both success and adversity while maintaining a positive outlook on life?

Those conversations became the beginning of my own journey.

And ultimately, they became the beginning of our journey with ACFA.

While football is what brings players through our doors, our vision has always been much bigger than football itself.

We want to help young people develop confidence, resilience, self-awareness, character and a healthy sense of identity.

We want players to know they are more than a footballer.

More than a position.

More than a result.

More than a jersey number.

At the same time, we are passionate about helping ambitious players pursue their dreams. For those who aspire to play at representative level, professionally, or even on the biggest stage in world football, we want to provide an environment that helps them maximise their potential.

Our goal is to help players develop the technical, tactical and mental skills needed to perform at their best, while also ensuring they have the tools to thrive as people beyond the game.

Because football eventually ends for everyone.

The person you become throughout the journey is what lasts forever.

That is why I love coaching.

Not because of the goals scored or the games won.

But because every training session is an opportunity to help a young person grow in confidence, develop resilience, chase their dreams and discover who they are both on and off the field.

If we can help players become better footballers while also becoming stronger, healthier and more resilient people, then we have achieved something truly meaningful.

And that is a journey worth being part of.
